|AFA’s 2014 Members’ Ferret Photo Contest
Ferrets: They’re not people, but from the look of things, most of us think they are. Our fuzzy friends are our
constant companions, and if the internet proves anything at all, it’s that we quite literally can’t get enough of them.
Cat and dog people have nothing on us, we are ferret obsessed.
As things go on the internet, though, we’re going to have to find out who, in fact, has a ferret who will stand still
long enough for that one great shot. Amateur ferret photographers, here’s your challenge - enter the American Ferret Association’s
“2014 Members’ Ferret Photo Contest.” For this, we need your help—and your photos.
The contest runs from May 1 to September 1, after which point we’ll determine the winners. The best 12 pictures will be featured
on a bed sized woven blanket and will be used to create the 2015 AFA Ferret Calendar. The grand prize winner will receive the blanket,
their ferret’s photo on the cover of the American Ferret Report, as well as the 2015 AFA Ferret Calendar. The other 11 winners will
have the honor of having their photo used on the blanket, as well as receive a 2015 AFA Ferret Calendar. Additional blankets and
calendars will be for sale at either Dooktoberfest or Winter Nationals (ordering details will be provided later). Download the following
pdf for all the rules and the entry form.

|The American Ferret Association (AFA) announces its 2014 First Annual Call for Proposals from Veterinarians.
The purpose of the AFA’s Pamela Slack, DVM Medical Research Grant Fund is to promote research that specifically leads to the
improvement in clinical care of ferrets, pertaining to captive health, diet, and husbandry in privately owned situations.
AFA officers, AFA board members, or AFA committee chairs are not eligible for application. Member veterinarians of AFA will be
given first consideration.
Funding level is limited to a maximum of $2000 per submission. Available funds are determined by donations to the AFA’s
Pamela Slack, DVM Medical Research Grant Fund.
Competitive proposals must be clearly outlined with projects achievable within 1 year of funding. Priority will be given to
projects that are founded on sound research principles, can be fully completed at the level of requested funding, and are likely to
result in presentation at a scientific conference, publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and a write up for the American Ferret
The due date for receipt of proposals is due Friday, August 29, 2014. The winning proposal will be notified October 1, 2014.

|Every Ferret Counts UPDATE!
The American Ferret Association’s "Ferret Census 2012"
The American Ferret Association (AFA) finalized data collection in its first-ever ferret census
in March. Throughout the past year, more than 2200 ferret owners logged into the survey and answered
55 questions about their ferrets, health and nutrition, color patterns, ages and more!
The AFA’s Education Committee has now analyzed the data for 33 of these questions and continues
to work on those remaining. After the analysis, we will be sharing the results. Ferret owners,
veterinarians, shelters and retailers of products for ferrets will all benefit from the sharing
process! Reports of the data will appear in the American Ferret Report, on the AFA web page, on
the AFA Facebook page and in special publications.
Volunteers interested in assisting with the remaining data analysis, interpretation and sharing
of the census results should contact the AFA.
The winner of the one-year AFA membership (from those who submitted the survey) will be announced
here SOON! Thank you to everyone for participating in this ground-breaking research. We couldn't
have done it without you!
